Menopause in the Workplace: Breaking the Silence

The Reality of Menopause at Work

Perimenopause, the transitional phase before menopause, can start as early as the late 30s or early 40s. Menopause typically occurs around age 51. During this time, fluctuating hormones can cause a range of symptoms—hot flashes, sleep disturbances, brain fog, mood swings, anxiety, and fatigue—all of which can impact a woman’s performance and confidence at work.

Research shows that many women feel pressure to hide their symptoms or “push through” the discomfort. This can lead to burnout, absenteeism, or even leaving the workforce altogether. But it doesn’t have to be this way.

Why Workplace Support Matters

Creating a menopause-friendly work environment isn’t just good for employee health—it’s good business. When women feel supported, they’re more likely to stay engaged, productive, and loyal to their employer. Simple adjustments—like flexible schedules, access to wellness resources, or even just an understanding manager—can make a big difference.

Employers can also benefit by offering training or education for managers to understand the realities of menopause. Awareness reduces stigma and creates a culture where women feel safe to ask for what they need.

What You Can Do

If you’re experiencing perimenopause or menopause symptoms at work:

  • Talk to your doctor. There are effective treatments and strategies to manage symptoms—from lifestyle changes to hormone therapy.
  • Advocate for yourself. If you’re comfortable, speak with HR or a supervisor about accommodations that could help you perform at your best.
  • Connect with others. You’re not alone. Peer support—whether in person or online—can offer validation and helpful tips.

And if you’re an employer, this is an opportunity to foster a more supportive and inclusive workplace. Recognizing menopause as a normal part of a woman’s life helps create an environment where employees feel valued, understood, and empowered to thrive.
